The quest for the solar gravity modes (or g modes) is key for the understanding of the structure and dynamics of the solar core. In this paper, we review the state of our search for detecting the solar g modes. We approach the detection problem from three different aspects. First, we summarize everything that is theoretical known today on the Sun and on the physics of the modes (excitation and damping). Second, we build the detection techniques like bricks in a playset. Third, we apply some of the detection techniques by combining these bricks, and confront the findings / non-findings with our theoretical knowledge of the Sun. We conclude with a prospective on how we could improve our techniques for an unambiguous identification of the g modes. (* Talk given on behalf of the Phoebus group)
